Interim Assistant pastor

John A. Carroll - John met Christ after an intense conversation with a campus Christian worker at VA Tech during his junior year. That day he realized that the illusion of personal success, financial prosperity, and a future marriage would never fill the void in his heart or resolve his dread of death and of meeting a holy God as a guilty sinner. The Lord graciously heard his cry for help and began a transforming work in him that continues to this day including peace and assurance that Christ’s death on the cross is the only sufficient basis for forgiveness of sin and the promise of eternal life.

“My life has been full.  The Lord blessed me with a wonderful wife, Mary, three lovely married daughters and six precious grandchildren.  Mary and I were privileged to serve for 28 years in campus ministry with the Navigators in California, South Carolina, and Argentina.  A midlife career change led to graduation from Columbia International University (M Div), and calls to pastoral ministry at Central Presbyterian Church in Kingstree, SC and Christ Church in Katy, TX.  I also greatly benefited from my studies at Reformed Theological Seminary (Charlotte) which led to a Doctor of Ministry degree.  I am currently an honorably retired member of the Blue Ridge Presbytery (Presbyterian Church in America), and it is my joy and privilege to serve Grace Church during this transition season as interim assistant pastor.”

Mary and John live on their family farm in Bedford County where he grew up.  They call it "Thistle Dew Farm" because--although it’s not heaven--this’ll do until they get there. Their favorite activities include hiking, visiting their children and grandchildren on both coasts of the USA,  and exploring country roads, antique shops and historical sites. But nothing surpasses worship and fellowship with their many wonderful friends at Grace Church.

John blogs occasionally at and is the author of Cover to Cover: through the Bible in 365 days. You can reach John here.
