[Jesus] is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:25 ESV
Ever since the sin of our first parents brought guilt and death, planet earth has been a war zone with Satan’s forces in constant battle with the redeemed people of God who have come to know Him by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. So, we are reminded whenever we face disease, death, and all kinds of evil that we look for a better city whose builder and maker is God—a kingdom that cannot be shaken.
Meanwhile, we are equipped by the Word of God to labor and persevere with our spiritual eyes set upon our Savior and upon what is to come when He returns and makes all things new. The Bible promises us every needed resource now and glorious rewards then.
In the first century, there were believers who faced such extreme opposition that their faith was tested almost to the breaking point. The Epistle to the Hebrews was written to reassure those believers--Jewish Christians suffering persecution--that their faith in Jesus Christ was indeed the way to God. Jesus is superior to angels, to Moses, and to the priests of the Old Covenant law. “Don’t look back!” the letter urged them. “Consider Jesus. Look to Jesus.”
To drive home this point, the writer of Hebrews laid out the doctrine of the high priesthood of Jesus Christ. None of the former priests could fulfill the needs of those sufferers. Jesus is the priest who made a perfect offering for sin. He made that offering on the cross, but the impact of His sacrifice extended to the heavenly temple not made with hands in the presence of God Himself.
They and we all need a priest, but not one according to the priesthood of Aaron. Those priests were sinful. Those priests were mortal. Their ministry was flawed by sin and limited by death. Jesus came as our High Priest. Through Him we draw near to God. Not only that, but since the risen Son of God continues forever His priesthood does too.
[Jesus] is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
What this says to us is “come to God through Jesus Christ.” Don’t attempt to make yourself good enough to merit God’s favor. In humble repentance and faith come to Christ and base your hope on Him alone and be received by God as His adopted child forever. Then live life in confidence that the One who died for you also lives forever to save you completely. COVID 19 is real and bad, but it is not eternal. Jesus our High Priest is real and good, and He IS eternal. He lives and He prays for us as we struggle in this war zone called earth. But we won’t always be here. Our High Priest is coming for us. Are you trusting Him? If so, do you know He prays for you right now? He does, and He always will.
